Breeding Not Possible Empty

I joined a few days ago, and I have had trouble trying to breed some horses. I have a few eligible mares in my stable, but when I try to breed with certain sires from other stables, I receive the following message:

"BREEDING NOT POSSIBLE - Horse is in another game group."

What does this mean and what constitutes a "game group"?
